چکیده

This paper describes two statistical iterative reconstruction methods for X-ray CT. The rst method assumes a mono-energetic model for X-ray attenuation. We approximate the transmission Poisson likelihood by a quadratic cost function and exploit its convexity to derive a separable quadratic surrogate function that is easily minimized using parallelizable algorithms. Ordered subsets are used to accelerate convergence. We apply this mono-energetic algorithm (with edge-preserving regularization) to simulated thorax X-ray CT scans. A few iterations produce reconstructed images with lower noise than conventional FBP images at equivalent resolutions. The second method generalizes the physical model and accounts for the poly-energetic X-ray source spectrum and the measurement nonlinearities caused by energy-dependent attenuation. We assume the object consists of a given number of nonoverlapping tissue types. The attenuation coeÆcient of each tissue is the product of its unknown density and a known energy-dependent mass attenuation coeÆcient. We formulate a penalized-likelihood function for this polyenergetic model and develop an iterative algorithm for estimating the unknown densities in each voxel. Applying this method to simulated X-ray CT measurements of a phantom containing both bone and soft tissue yields images with signi cantly reduced beam hardening artifacts.

Beam Hardening Correction in X-Ray Computed Tomography: A Comparison of Two Iterative Model-Based Reconstruction Methods

While the expenses for computational power decrease, iterative reconstruction methods for x-ray computed tomography (CT) that allow the use of improved model assumptions, become more attractive. In applications for non-destructive testing one of the most common degradations of image quality with standard x-ray CT reconstruction methods is beam hardening. Techniques for beam hardening correction...

Artifact reduction techniques in Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging modality

Introduction: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was introduced and became more common based on its low cost, fast image procedure rate and low radiation dose compared to CT. This imaging modality improved diagnostic and treatment-planning procedures by providing three-dimensional information with greatly reduced level of radiation dose compared to 2D dental imaging modalitie...

Multi-Material Beam Hardening Correction(MMBHC) in Computed Tomography

In computed tomography (CT), the nonlinear attenuation characteristics of polychromatic X-rays cause beam hardening artifacts in the reconstructed images. State-of-theart methods to correct the beam hardening effect are mostly single material precorrections (e.g. water-precorrection), which are far less efficient when more than one material is present in the field of measurement. The use of tho...

Segmentation-free statistical image reconstruction for polyenergetic x-ray computed tomography with experimental validation.

This paper describes a statistical image reconstruction method for x-ray CT that is based on a physical model that accounts for the polyenergetic x-ray source spectrum and the measurement nonlinearities caused by energy-dependent attenuation. Unlike our earlier work, the proposed algorithm does not require pre-segmentation of the object into the various tissue classes (e.g., bone and soft tissu...

The Application of Beam Hardening Correction for Industrial X-ray Computed Tomography

X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a non-destructive, radiographic scanning technique that enables the visualisation of both the internal geometry and the composition of a workpiece; X-ray CT is therefore well suited for non-destructive inspection tasks. Several physical processes reduce the quality of CT images, and therefore influence both qualitative and quantitative analyses made from CT dat...
